Ecuador is, for its size, the most diverse country in the world. This country is breaking ground in becoming the model for sustainable tourism for South America. It is blessed with four natural regions: the Coast, Andes, Amazon and Galapagos Islands. These distinctive regions offer a truly mind-blowing array of experiences.
Ecuador has the greatest biodiversity per kilometer in the world. It occupies first place with regards to species per area.
No other country has as many bird species in such a small land area. With a list of over 1630 species, Ecuador ranks among the top countries for bird diversity.

ECUADOR: Birder’s Paradise

WELCOME TO CASA DE PIEDRA
MINDO: great for eco-tourism
Mindo is located only one and half hour from Quito. Ideal to relax, enjoy the surrounding nature, observe varieties of orchids, birds and butterflies, and to do extreme sports such as canopy, tubing three levels (Mindo-style), canyoning, etc.
Mindo has been designated as an IBA (Important Bird Area) and was the first one in South America. Also Mindo has won first place on several occasions for registering more than 400 species of birds in the annual count. As a consequence, it has been selected as the best place for bird watching by AUDUBON (American Birding Association).
Hummingbirds have an overpowering attraction to observers due to their iridescence and acrobatics. In the Andes, these birds are commonly known as “quindes’ (Quichua word). More than 130 species live in Ecuador. An outstanding variety of hummingbirds can be seen in Mindo, where up to 28 species have been seen in one day, a world record! Mindo is one of the best areas for bird watching worldwide.
